Remote scour protection by Jan De Nul

The Jan De Nul Group was contracted for the engineering, procurement, construction and installation of the offshore wind power park, Nobelwind. The Nobelwind Park is located 46 km off the coast of Zeebrugge, Belgium and contains 50 Vestas wind turbines of 3.3 MW each, supplying a total of 165 MW of clean power to 197.000 households.

For the transport and installation of the monopiles and turbines, Jan de Nul called upon its offshore jack-up heavy lift vessel Vidar. Its pipe vessel Simon Stevin was tasked with placing scour protection around the piles to prevent the erosion of seabed material. It was in this particular operation that Jan de Nul made use of Green Pin® Spring Release ROV Shackles. A ‘bird cage’ frame was placed on top of the monopile and lowered down to the seabed. Then, the Green Pin® Spring Release ROV Shackles were remotely disassembled to enable the release of rocks around the monopile.
